And as a side note, I saw the founder, Anne Beiler on the show, "Secret Millionaire." She is an ex-Amish. This is probably why we see such simple, real ingredients in the original soft pretzels and not the typical slew of chemicals. She left the Amish to marry her non-Amish husband. In 1988, she started Auntie Anne's pretzels selling her original soft pretzels and lemonade in a booth at a local farmer's market which soon led to franchising. She then sold the company in 2005.

These are my son's favorite flavor of pop tarts. These do contain corn syrup (dextrose) and are stage 2 so we don't do them often but it's nice to have something to grab when you're in a hurry in the morning.

I think pop tarts are the breakfast food of choice for many kids and teenagers (for them, I think it has more to do with mom telling they they're old enough to make their own breakfast and what's easier than opening up a pop tart?). So easy enough to just buy these instead of the regular pop tarts which are loaded with dyes, artificial flavors, and high fructose corn syrup. The brown sugar maple cinnamon flavor is the only one that is stage 1 but we haven't tried those yet. Sheri Forteshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08867369624294607115noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6183885377001549747.post-54465844093554023612013-02-09T21:03:00.002-08:002013-02-09T21:03:25.414-08:00Trader Joe's Whoopee Pies

So excited to hear back from Papa John's and hear that they do not use pan spray and their ingredients look clean! They were approved for years but then stopped filling out forms.

They e-mailed me back right away and sent me a bunch of information about their products.

We get the hand-tossed cheese pizza. The thin crust has corn syrup (listed as dextrose) which we avoid. Make sure you ask them to sub a pizza sauce for the garlic sauce they give you on the side. The garlic sauce has artificial flavors. I have a recipe for their garlic sauce.

If you are stage one, you can order the pizza with no sauce and extra cheese and then just dip in homemade garlic sauce. I tell my kids it's garlic bread with cheese.

And apparently, skip the pepper! Yellow dye! I didn't know that. My daughter used to occasionally eat those. And, no pepperoni either. We just always get cheese.

If you have a party coming up, I freeze a couple slices in a big zip lock bag. Then pull it out and heat it up at the party.

You can sign up online to earn points and coupons. I've gotten two free pizzas this year already and we rarely order from there anymore (GFCF now). We hadn't ordered for a while, so they sent us a coupon for a free pizza. Last year, the correct team won the Super Bowl so they sent out a coupon for a free pizza to all their subscribers.

present in any of our products. (In addition, for what it's worth, we do not
allow the use of any HIGH FRUCTOSE corn syrup in any of our private label

We were so excited when this cheese first came out a couple of years ago. We've been eating it ever since. It's one of the only dairy free cheeses without soy. We use the cheddar style and the mozzarella style shreds. Feingold just recently said they cannot list Daiya as approved because Daiya's supplier of the natural flavors will not disclose what ingredients they use. Feingold doesn't know if it would be stage one or stage two and whether it contains any chemicals. I contacted Daiya and below is their response.

Company Response:

We outsource only the highest quality ingredients that are 100% non-GMO and MSG free, and do not add MSG to our recipes. In addition, our Vegan Natural Flavors are plant based (mainly oils and essences), 100% GMO and MSG free. The flavors are natural and do not contain many of the common allergens including soy, dairy (casein and lactose), gluten, eggs, rice, peanuts and tree nuts (expect coconut oil).

Their web site also states that they do not use any artificials or preservatives in their products.

http://www.daiyafoods.com/our-products/cheddar

Amy's Kitchen uses Daiya cheese in their microwavable mac-n-cheeses. Amy's is known as a company that avoids harmful additives so I feel that Daiya is probably safe. I have not noticed that my kids react to it. I have heard of a few people on the GFCF board who say that they do have reactions, but others on there use it without a problem. The thought is that it may increase yeast.

Ingredients: (for the cheddar shreds)

Filtered water, tapioca and /or arrowroot flours, non-GMO expeller pressed canola and /or non-GMO expeller pressed safflower oil, coconut oil, pea protein, salt, inactive yeast, vegan natural flavors, vegetable glycerin, xanthan gum, citric acid (for flavor), annatto, titanium dioxide

While there's really nothing "healthy" nutrition wise in the ingredients, it's nice to have a cheese substitute. We use this for grilled cheese, scrambled eggs, chili, and tacos. We use the mozzarella shreds for pizza, quesadillas, and spaghetti. Their web site has a bunch of recipes for using their cheeses. A lot of them look really good. I want to try some of them out.

Make sure you freeze this. It doesn't keep long in the fridge.

Where to Buy:

We get these at Whole Foods or our local health food store. You can also order a large bag online but you have to pay extra for shipping and the cold pack.

Has anyone had any issues with these? Please leave a comment!

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">My kids love "SM" as they call it. It's one of the only mainstream pop that does not contain corn syrup.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">This isn't listed in the Feingold shopping guide for some reason. Pepsi's response isn't too convincing. However, if you look at the Feingold Fast Food Guide they do list regular Sierra Mist as approved (but has corn syrup).

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Many Feingold members drink Sierra Mist Natural without any problems. We like to add marachino cherries and cherry juice to ours. Yum! It's a Christmas dinner tradition.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">They came out with a Strawberry Kiwi Sierra Mist Natural this summer. We tried it and it was good but now we can't find it any stores. I don't know if they discontinued it.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">We are also peanut free, so we would use Sunflower Butter instead of peanut butter. These do have soy however if you avoid soy. I stopped using them though because I did not see them in the Feingold Shopping Guide.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Health Valley had other cereals that were approved so it couldn't be that the company refused to fill out forms.

Oh, Kirkland's, we wanted to love you. You're organic. You have no carrageean. You come in cases at Costco. But, alas, you have BHT!

Company Response

We have received an answer back from our Kirkland Signature team regarding your
inquiry about BHT. BHT is used as an antioxidant in the Vitamin A at very low
levels. This is very common and the use of BHT as an antioxidant in Vitamin A is
not a food preservative. Since the Vitamin A is added to the Ricemilk at a very
low percentage, the BHT would be at even lower levels (parts per billion or
undetectable levels in the ricemilk). Please note we are currently continuing to
pursue further information on eliminating BHT with the vitamin
supplier.

Thank you,

Costco Wholesale

I like how Costco tries to downplay the BHT used here and then they follow it up with saying they are trying to eliminate it. If it's not bad, why are you trying to eliminate it? And, yes it is common to hide BHT in vitamin A palmitate, but that doesn't mean BHT is still not a harmful chemical. It doesn't matter if they use a small amount or not. If it's in there, it's not a product I will be feeding my kids.

Great example of how some companies can mislead consumers by labeling their products organic and containing no preservatives. Not all organic products will be clean.

Kirkland's is one company that Feingold is still trying to work with. They are still waiting to hear back from them on their products. I like that I now know that this rice milk is not acceptable.

We use Pacific Original rice milk. Woodman's is the only place I can find it. It is $2.19 there. You can also order it online from www.amazon.com.

We also use So Delicious Original coconut milk from Woodman's. It's $1.99 at Woodman's and $2.99 at Whole Foods.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I usually tailor it to the product. If I see a product that seems like it does
not have any artificial colors or flavors in it, I may just ask if they have
any preservatives in their product and see what their response is. I did that

I started The All Natural Diet blog because I want parents to be able to make informed decisions about what they feed their families. We do the Feingold Diet and we love it. But there are some items that are not included in the shopping guide, for various reasons.

So, I decided to take things into my own hands. As a mother of four kids with food allergies, we are already limited with our food choices. I found that over the years, and particularly when we started doing the GFCF (gluten and dairy free) diet, that many of the products we were eating were not in the Feingold shopping guide, despite the fact that they "looked" clean.

Some of the products were not in the shopping guide because the manufacturers refuse to respond and fill out Feingold's forms. Feingold therefore will not list them in the guide. It's quite possible that some of these foods are clean and we are missing out on foods that we could safely feed to our kids.

Other times, Feingold is waiting to hear back from a manufacturer. I'm not sure how long they wait but sometimes it is months or even a couple of years before they finally just say that they are not going to respond and are then put on the "black list."
There is an area on the Feingold web site that shows all the companies that have been blacklisted.

If I as a consumer contact these companies, I can get answers, and often in a matter of a few days. Now my way of contacting the manufacturer is not as sophisticated as Feingold's but it's better than nothing. And there are times when I get an answer that something definitely is not approved and contains some kind of chemical. At least then I know to avoid that product for sure.

I like having all the information I can about a product so that I can make an informed decision about what foods to feed my family. Feingold is a great resource but it isn't the end all. I am ultimately the one who makes the decision on what to feed my family, not Feingold.

So, I decided to contact these manufacturers myself and post their responses here. There are also many products that are not listed because they simply have not been researched yet. If you mention it on the boards, you will be told to submit it to PIC for review. I did that once for a few items and the process was very lengthy and tedious. I've found writing the companies myself to be a better use of my time and sometimes more efficient.

For the money we pay to have a membership, I feel Feingold should be doing more of the work, not the member. When items are mentioned on the board, they should immediately get on it and research the product. I can understand if they just didn't know about a new product, but that often is not the case. A product can sometimes be out for a couple of years before Feingold lists them in the shopping guide.

I've contacted a few companies already and will start getting those posted here in the next few weeks. For the most part, I am asking them if their products contain any artificial colors, flavors, the preservatives BHT, TBHQ, or BHA, either in their product or in the packaging. I also ask if these additives are within any of the other ingredients they use that they may outsource from another company.

You can read their exact responses so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not to use their products. I will list them as "clean" or "unclean" based on their responses and my best guesstimate.

We have been doing Feingold for eight years so I have become accustom to reading labels and also for watching my kids to see if they are having a reaction to a food.

I am also going to try to post a picture of each product as I know this is really helpful when you are trying to find a new product in the store. Sorry, my pictures on not professional! I just want to show an example of the product.

We also avoid corn syrup, MSG, nitrates, nitrites, and sodium benzoate. These are allowed on the Feingold Diet but we choose to avoid them for health reasons. I go into more detail about that on my e-book that is set to be released in February, 2013 on Kindle. I also explain how to read labels and what all these additives are made of and how they can affect your child. The e-book will be getting a new title, to be announced soon.

But anyways, I may list some products that do contain corn syrup, MSG or one of these other additives. It's up to you if you want to avoid them or not. Things with corn syrup we may eat on occasion or for special events like Christmas or while we're on vacation, as it's nearly impossible to avoid MSG and corn syrup when eating out.

If you have contacted a manufacturer or wish to do so, please feel free to forward me their response and I will post it. Send it to: sheridavis27@comcast.net. For more details on how to do that, please see read the following post here.

http://theallnaturaldiet.blogspot.com/2012/12/products-to-be-reviewed.html

Please also include the original question posed to the company. There are times when the company will give a response that is technically answering your question, but allowing them room to be dishonest. I sometimes have to send them a follow up question to clarify and get the answer I am looking for. Manufacturers can be very sneaky in their answers.

I hope this list will help parents make the best choices possible for their families. Please use this as a guide and not a Bible. Ingredients can change at any time. I hope this also sends a message to manufacturers that we want them to use clean ingredients and take all the chemicals and junk out of our foods!

If you have a child with ADHD or another related issue, I would suggest using the Feingold program. The All Natural Diet is just a way for people to make more informed decisions about the food they eat. It's not a program to correct any diagnosed issues.

I will not be listing whether a product is stage one or stage two Feingold. I also will not list if a product is Feingold approved. For that information you'll have to join Feingold.

My intention is to just help people make better and more informed choices about their food. It's quite possible that I will list a food as "clean" when it really isn't. I apologize in advance for that but again, this is not a strict program. There are no rules. I will not send the food police to your house if you eat off diet. You can choose to eat unclean foods sometimes if you want to. I won't judge.

I just think people need to take back control of their health by having as much information as possible. Of course the best and healthiest way to eat is to avoid all processed foods and eat all raw fruits and vegetables, seeds, and nuts.

But, let's be practical. We live in America and we have kids. I'm not endorsing any of these products as being healthy, because let's face it, some of them are not. But, if you have to eat processed foods, let them at least be free of chemicals and additives that are known to be hazardous to your health and cause behavioral issues.

I read a blog post by a vegan who said the following: "Food is power, and by taking the control of it back into your hands as much as you possibly can, you are strengthening yourself as a human person."

They also quoted John Jeavons, a great humanitarian and farmer who once said, "Food is power...are you in control of yours?"

I LOVE these statements! They are so true! That's the message I want to convey through this blog. No one is responsible for your health but YOU. Not your doctor, not me, not Feingold, not your parents, not the government, not the FDA (certainly not the FDA!). We all need to do our own research and educate ourselves on what's in the food we are eating.

(Here is the article I took the above quotes from. Great article too by the way. I will be making my own rice milk very soon! http://www.veganreader.com/2009/05/17/how-to-make-rice-milk-and-stop-supporting-rice-dream/ )

Eating a diet free of additives is a baby step in the right direction, especially if you are used to eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). If you are already educated and eating healthy, this web site may not help you very much. That's good news! You're already way ahead of the game by eating non-processed foods. But, I think this blog can be helpful for the typical American family who wants to make more informed healthier choices from what's available in their local grocery store.

Again, this is not a full proof, follow it by the book diet. I am just conveying the information I have gathered and giving my opinion on products. The rest is up to you.
Appears Clean

My older son has been eating these for a while. They're great to serve at parties. Now here's something I didn't know! These have corn syrup!

I have an older bag of these and it just lists malt syrup in the ingredients. So it looks like they just changed the labeling recently because I got the below ingredient list off of their web site. Also note how they told me their malt syrup contains corn grits but their web site shows "corn syrup." Interesting.

Now I know that malt syrup is just one more possible name for corn syrup. But, otherwise these appear to be clean. We just choose to avoid corn syrup.

We'll be sticking with the Utz pretzels from Sam's Club. Right now they have a big container of Christmas shaped pretzels. At Halloween, they had individual bags in a big container. These are only out seasonally though so we will be stocking up now.

Angie's just got a new look. Personally, I liked the old packaging better but I'm sure they were going for something more eye-catching.

We love this popcorn! But be warned, they are addicting! Costco sometimes has them in the big bags.

They make other varieties too. We tried the caramel and I didn't care for it but my daughter liked it. I won't buy it again though because it is SO sweet. The classic, now called "sweet and salty" is sweet enough. My son did end up in the nurse's office one day at school though because he bit down on a kernel. Watch out for those!

We've been eating this popcorn since it came out a couple of years ago. As of 2012's guide, these have yet to make it into the Feingold shopping guide.

I submitted it to Feingold, and they did have them as approved as Feingold stage 1, GFCF. I'm guessing it is set to be in the 2013 shopping guide. I wrote to Angie's at the same time. I will post their response below when I get it.

Thank you Angie's Artisan Treats for making a chemical free yummy product!

INGREDIENTS YOU’LL LOVE

Popcorn, Sunflower Oil, Evaporated Cane Juice, Sea Salt.

Where to buy?

I get these at Woodman's or Costco. They often go on sale at Woodman's for $2.50 a bag. The better price is Costco in the bigger bags but they don't always have them. Whole Foods, the health food store, and regular grocery store chains also sell Angie's. I'm not sure if they are nationwide yet. When we went to Florida a couple of years ago, we couldn't find them anywhere. You can probably also order them online from www.amazon.com.
